Law & Human Rights Project

Law & Humans Rights volunteers in Argentina work at the Projects Abroad Human Rights Office in Cordoba and will gain first-hand experience of human rights law in practice. All volunteers will get the opportunity to work alongside qualified local lawyers on worthwhile projects, within a structured programme.

Volunteers will have the unique opportunity to get involved at a grass roots level, raising awareness of human rights in a variety of marginalised communities or at risk groups.

The work is suitable for volunteers with a general interest in law and human rights, law students seeking an internship placement, and graduates or legal professionals seeking practical experience. The experience will serve to boost any CV and you will be participating in worthwhile campaigns to advance change.

The Projects Abroad Human Rights Office in Argentina recognises the necessity for re-building peaceful societies and communities respectful of human rights values, justice and human dignity; and the need to promote and protect the human rights of all.

Volunteering on a Law & Human Rights Project in Argentina

The Projects Abroad Human Rights Office is a professional organisation with a demanding programme, and as such must be taken seriously. The project requires volunteers with a strong interest in affecting change for the better while keeping in mind the long-term aims.

As a Law & Human Rights volunteer you will be allocated to a placement which meets your skills, interests and preferences. Volunteers usually work with people or communities needing a wide range of assistance, and in some cases you may be working with abused and vulnerable individuals.

Preparing a Human Rights Workshop

Day-to-day tasks may involve:

  • Interviewing victims/perpetrators of human rights abuses.
  • Academic research and reporting.
  • Out-of-office fieldwork, including outreach projects with abused women and children’s shelters, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and disadvantaged communities.
  • Presentations to local communities.
  • Attending and planning for human rights related conferences, workshops and public debates.

Volunteers are involved in the following areas of work:

Education and Awareness

Human Rights awareness is conducted for two main reasons: education and empowerment. Many victims of abuses are not aware of their fundamental human rights or the protection afforded to them by law, while perpetrators are often unaware to the responsibilities they have to others. Educating the victims and the abusers is therefore extremely important and leads naturally to empowerment, as increased understanding and awareness encourage legal conformity and access to justice in the future.

The Projects Abroad Human Rights Office regularly performs educational and awareness-raising outreach work to tackle a variety of human rights issues. These may involve travel to rural communities, schools, and other local institutions to make presentations and provide training. We often partner with relevant authorities to address issues of domestic violence, intestate succession, offender's rights, child labour, child trafficking, and the right to education, to name but a few.

Human Rights Monitoring

In order to identify communities and individuals in need of assistance we perform human rights monitoring. This targets areas and facilities to identify abuses, determine their gravity, assess the needs of people affected, prioritise victims, and determine a strategy to bring about change.

We also monitor facilities and activities of associate organisations to offer our most effective and efficient assistance. Such assistance may be in terms of personnel support, fundraising and financial assistance, or simply making recommendations.

This monitoring occurs in rural farming areas, in communities of foreign nationals or seasonal migrants, in city slums, in courts, in areas of landfill, in daily media and in facilities under the direction of state institutions or NGOs.

Monitoring also allows us to consider our own level of success so that we may perform better in the future.

Abuse Resolution

Victims of human rights abuses will often come to our attention through our open door legal service and consultations, our monitoring and awareness projects, and through referrals from associate organisations and individuals. In such cases, we will proceed to assist those victims as directly as possible rather than offering assistance in a community setting.

This Law & Human Rights project is available for two weeks if you don't have time to join us for a month or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely on the project, please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
