Volunteer in Cambodia

Cambodia Map

Cambodia is a wonderful country, at the same time optimistic and charismatic but with the legacy of an appalling recent history hanging over it. It has a unique culture and is very much a forward looking place.

Projects are available for anyone interested in volunteering in the developing world, whether you are on a gap year, summer placement, or career break.

Projects Abroad is based in Phnom Penh, Cambodia's spirited and charming capital city. Volunteers live together in shared apartments close to the city center. If you join a Care project you can work with orphans, street children, kids with disabilities, or children who have HIV/AIDS. Working with Cambodia’s youth helps give the younger generation of Cambodians a brighter future. We also offer volunteer opportunities teaching English and/or French in orphanages and charity schools.

Our medical internships are based in Phnom Penh's state hospitals and are suitable for medical students who have completed at least one year of medical studies.

Physiotherapy volunteers are also needed to work in rehabilitation centers with children who have a variety of disabilities.

If you want to explore the culture, language and history of Cambodia, consider joining the Khmer Project - part of our Community Projects - that immerses you in Khmer traditions.

Our pioneering Conservation Project is based on a small tropical island that is a two hours boat ride from the lively coastal town of Sihanoukville. This is a great project for adventurous volunteers interested in learning to scuba dive and taking part in a variety of conservation activities in and out of the water.

The conservation project is well supported by the local community which reflects the value of our work. Our volunteers here also spend time with the local children helping to develop the links we have started.

Finally, our Human Rights internship offers the opportunity to work alongside a respected humanitarian organization while gaining first-hand experience in human-rights law.

Voluntary Work in Cambodia

Kids in Cambodia With its pristine beaches, ancient temples and exotic jungle, it's easy to see why Cambodia’s turbulent history is now becoming an increasingly distant memory. This beautiful country is at peace and Cambodians are focused on building a positive future. Many areas of Phnom Penh are booming; the city has an elegant riverfront and lively nightlife and its people are friendly, dignified and optimistic. Still, it remains hard to escape the poverty and the fact that many Cambodians struggle to survive.

Cambodia is about two-thirds the size of the United Kingdom and one of the least populated Asian countries. With a coastline on the tropical Gulf of Thailand, Cambodia occupies the heart of South East Asia and at one time was home to the mighty Khmer empire.

Much of Cambodia is dissected by the impressive Mekong River. It is a fertile country with forests and gemstone mines that will help build the framework for future growth. If you're interested in international volunteer work in an unspoiled country, now's certainly the time to see Cambodia.

Volunteering and Travel in Cambodia

Volunteer at Ankor Wat

By traveling to Cambodia you will be amazed by the juxtaposition of vibrant cities, beautiful scenery and famous historical landmarks like Angkor Wat. The world famous gathering of temples near Siem Reap is a must see for all visitors - climbing over huge tree roots to the entrance of partly hidden doorways is guaranteed to bring out the Indiana Jones in anyone!

However, Cambodia offers far more than ancient temples. You can go elephant trekking in the East, snorkeling and dolphin watching in the seas surrounding Sihanoukville, or take in the sunset at a local beach restaurant.

Traveling to the neighboring countries is easy. You can follow the well-trodden tourist trail into Thailand, but border crossings are also accessible into Laos and Vietnam. The options are endless in this amazing country.
