International Volunteer Work with Children in China

Volunteer Abroad in ChinaChina is an amazing country to do volunteer work abroad. There are no previous qualifications or experience needed to volunteer on most of our care projects in China. Regardless of whether you are a gap year student or on a career break, all you need is energy and enthusiasm to be welcomed by your host organization. You will be able to offer a valuable contribution and play a large role in relieving the workload of local staff.

You will also add to the children’s quality of life, not only through the development of their social skills, but also through exposing them to new cultures and ideas. Some placements are only available to those with some experience in physical therapy or occupational therapy, so please let us know about any qualifications and experience you may have.

Volunteer ProfileCharlotte NielsenCharlotte Nielsen
Volunteering …truly put things in perspective for me. Seeing children who, despite their mental and physical disabilities, were still able to smile and laugh. Knowing that in some small way or another I played a part in bringing that about, was definitely one of the highest points of my experience in Shanghai.” Read more...

Volunteer Abroad in Care Centers, Kindergartens, and Special Needs Centers with Projects Abroad

Volunteering abroad on a Care project in China gives you a chance to make a difference in the lives of children in Chengdu and Shanghai. You will likely be asked to help with a wide range of activities depending on the age group and needs of those you are working with. You may be required to help the staff with basic care duties at certain times of the day, but there will be other times when the work is less structured and you can help by simply playing with the children.

Projects Abroad also works with several kindergartens in and around Chengdu and Shanghai. Here volunteers will be able to assist local teachers with all kinds of educational activities, such as arts and crafts and reading and writing. There are normally between 40 and 50 children in each class, so any help that you can provide will be appreciated.

There is also the opportunity to work at centers for disabled children. Volunteers help with support and care offered to residents and day visitors, accommodating both young children and teenagers. Centers provide physical rehabilitation, education, and nursing care for many children. Both physically and mentally stimulating exercises are used to improve the children’s capabilities and lead to a healthier life.

Although some of the staff on the care projects speak only a basic level of English, the enthusiasm of both the staff and children ensures that you will be able to make yourself understood. Both the Projects Abroad staff and your supervisor will always be available to ensure you make the most of your time in China.
