Mexico is a real mix of cultures. American, Spanish and Indian influences all come together to make a fascinating country. There is also a mix of the developed and developing world - a stimulating cocktail of wealth, poverty, Microsoft and Maņana. Mexico is definitely a colourful place.
Mexicans are proud of their roots and ancient traditions but also live with the US superpower next door. The importance of English is therefore apparent to everyone.
The city of Guadalajara is the home of Projects Abroad in Mexico. It is known as the most Mexican of cities. Tequila, sombreros, mariachi music and rodeo riders all came from Guadalajara. Our office is right next to the magnificent Expiatorio Cathedral in the centre of the city. We also have some projects in Ciudad Guzman which allows volunteers to see life in a small town in Mexico under the shadow of the great Colima volcano. If you are on the conservation project, you will be staying on the coast at our turtle camp about three and a half hours drive from Guadalajara.
Living in Mexico is an experience difficult to match. Attending a football fiesta followed by Tortas Ahogadas (pork rolls drowned in chilli sauce) is something that has to be experienced. A night out at one of Guadalajara's night clubs or drinking tequila at a family celebration is all part of life. Visiting a small town with a group of volunteers and becoming the star of the local festival. it's all quite likely in Mexico!
There are good and reliable bus services that criss-cross Mexico. There are modest hotels in almost every small town. To get away from it all, find a good map and some timetables and head for the beaches, hills, jungles or mountains. In Mexico it is easy to get off the beaten track.
