Medical Internships in Nepal

Medical elective Nepal

Taking part in a Projects Abroad Medical and Healthcare programme is a unique experience. Whether you are a pre-medical student, current student or professional, our volunteer programmes give you the opportunity to help others, travel to interesting places and challenge and develop yourself professionally.

In Nepal, the National Health System only provides for 15 per cent of its residents, resulting in a great scarcity of medical care to a largely underprivileged population. Our volunteers have the opportunity to work alongside qualified medical staff in and around Kathmandu and the region of Chitwan, where they will be gaining unique and practical experience in social and healthcare development in largely underprivileged and under resourced areas.

The extremely diverse range of work means you may be working with young underprivileged children, bustling and busy hospitals or specialised clinics. Volunteers also have the chance to work in specific departments such as general health services, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, dental services, ENT, orthopaedics, x-ray and ultrasound and assist with basic surgical and dressing services.

I didn’t feel like a tourist in Nepal, being a volunteer allows you to skip that and you become a part of the culture. I got to see how a health system works in a developing country, having the opportunity to witness surgeries, be part of deliveries, see a women’s health camp and teach first aid to school children, just to name a few. I made great friendships with the other nurses and doctors and will remember their hospitality and kindness forever.

We also offer placements where you will come into contact with many illnesses and symptoms which are extremely rare in the ‘West’. Many of these conditions are easily preventable and volunteers can be involved in campaigns to increase public awareness around health issues and to help improve the quality of life by educating people about health and sanitation.

If you wish to let us know your particular interests or expertise we will try to arrange for you to intern in that specific area. For all Medicine & Healthcare internships in Nepal you should speak at least intermediate English.

Physical Therapy Internships in Nepal

There is a real shortage of physical therapy skills in Nepal, so we provide interns of all abilities to observe and assist local doctors and physical therapists. You will find that the experience you gain will really help you to get an idea of how a busy physical therapy department works.

Some of our interns work at rehabilitation centers for disabled children. These are located within the Kathmandu Valley, from the ancient towns of Bhaktapur and Patan to those based on hilltops beside quaint villages on the outskirts of the capital city. Here interns often see cases with children who were born with polio or have had accidents that have not been treated correctly. Many placements deal with children with physical disabilities.

We also work with Patan Community Based Rehabilitation Organization. CBR is run through the combined efforts of disabled people themselves and their families and communities. Providing support and care, it offers services to Nepali children to help improve their standard of living. Interns often come across neglected orthopedic conditions such as TB, polio, post-burn contractures, and cerebral palsy. You might work with inpatients and with outpatients who attend a couple of times in the week, sometimes traveling many hours for a visit to the center.

All of these projects are ones where you can really build your resume - gaining experience you would not get in the West, while helping out these short-staffed institutions.

Volunteer Nursing in Nepal

There are a huge number of great opportunities for nursing volunteers in Nepal with Projects Abroad. Whether you are training to become a nurse, or if you’re a qualified nurse; with your unique skills, you can work in hospitals, clinics, orphanages, centres for people with a disability or care centres.

Volunteering in a developing country gives a unique cultural and professional experience. It is a constructive and giving role from which the volunteer gains skills, perspective and, often, direction.

With programmes ranging from clinical to children’s care, we are happy to discuss the many possibilities and opportunities with you and help you the right placement!

Medical Elective Internships in Nepal

medical elective nepal

You can do a Medical Elective in Nepal in Medicine or Physical Therapy.

If you are currently enrolled in medical school and wish to do your elective in Nepal, you will be working in and around Kathmandu or Chitwan. You will shadow one of our supervisors who are very experienced at working with western medical and physical therapy students. They will be eager to test out your knowledge, as well as give you the benefit of their training and experience.

Outside of the hospital you will live with a local host family, who will provide you with all your meals outside of your normal working hours. When you aren’t at work there is plenty to keep you occupied in Kathmandu and Chitwan: art, temples, architecture, restaurants, and cinemas. The surrounding area is fantastic for hiking or cycling, and you can take part in a number of adventure sports. Projects Abroad staff and volunteers are always around too, in case you require some company that reminds you of home!
