Volunteer Physiotherapy in Nepal

Physiotherapy in Nepal
There is a real shortage of physiotherapy skills in Nepal, so our volunteers can provide a real service to the many and varied centres we support in this amazing country.
Volunteers who are practicing or at any stage of study can find a constructive role in Nepal. We work with large hospitals and small rehabilitation clinics, a centre specialising in cerebral palsy and a small hospital working with conditions such as clubfoot and other physical disabilities.
Physiotherapy volunteer programs in Nepal are a great personal and professional development opportunity. And one where you can be genuinely useful and make a worthwhile contribution to your placement.
In many of the centres, there are a range of conditions presented by both in and out patients; volunteers will learn many new skills and techniques and possibly pass on some of their skills and knowledge to local staff.
Physiotherapy Placements in Nepal
The rehabilitation centres for disabled children are located within the Kathmandu valley, from the ancient towns of Bhaktapur and Patan to those based on hilltops beside quaint villages on the outskirts of the capital city. Here interns often see cases with children who were born with polio or have had accidents that have not been treated correctly. Many placements deal with children with physical disabilities.
An example is Patan Community Based Rehabilitation Organization (CBR). CBR is run through the combined efforts of disabled people themselves and their families and communities. Providing support and care, it offers services to Nepali children to help improve their standard of living. Volunteers will often come across conditions such as TB, polio, post-burn contractures, and cerebral palsy. You might work with inpatients and with outpatients who attend a couple of times in the week, sometimes traveling many hours for a visit to the centre.
We work with several other such centres, we ask volunteers to contact us to discuss them and which might be the most suitable program.
Volunteering as a Physiotherapist in Nepal
As with all our programs, volunteers must be proactive and enthusiastic. There are wonderful opportunities to make your time most worthwhile, but local staff are often too polite to tell you what to do. Ask and be willing, so many more doors will open for you.
Volunteers live with host families in Nepal which gives a great opportunity to really get to know its culture and day to day life.
