Volunteer Work in Tanzania

Volunteering in Tanzania puts you in touch with some incredibly worthwhile projects in a country that inspires all who visit. Based in two regions, the capital Dar es Salaam and the town of Arusha, we support numerous schools, orphanages, care centres, hospitals and a building programme. All offer practical and constructive roles for volunteers of all ages, from gap year students to retirees.
Projects Abroad volunteers in Tanzania work in a diverse range of programmes, ones where the volunteer can easily find a productive role. With a full time local staff, we support the placements all year round through the efforts of our volunteers, making Projects Abroad a most positive and consistent presence in the areas in which we work.

The childrens homes and orphanages vary in size and resources, some are quite small, caring for around 10 children, while some look after over 100 children, of all ages. The role of the volunteer will vary between settings, but in general it is providing extra constructive support and taking responsibility for activities; these might be lessons, exercise, games, personal hygiene or emotional support.
In the schools, volunteers teach English which is a vital skill for many in Tanzania and a fantastic way to really get to know the children. The schools are large and small, some lessons might under a tree, some in classrooms with no windows; all of them with eager children who will be fascinated by your background.
All Projects Abroad volunteers in Tanzania will live with local host families. This allows you to experience the true Tanzania, as a local. A very different world from the often luxurious hotels of the safari industry.
Volunteer Building Work and Medical Internships in Tanzania

Medical electives and internships in Tanzania are always popular. With English widely spoken and a largely understaffed health service, volunteers can be very useful, whether in large hospitals, more rural clinics or on community outreach programmes.
We are proud of our building programme in Tanzania, working in Masaai communities we are building nursery schools which will make a big difference to the educational facilities within these communities. Working in a fascinating culture, alongside local builders is hard work, but a great way to achieve something to be proud of while volunteering in Tanzania.
Tanzania is an intensely varied and colorful land on the East coast of Africa. Home to Africa’s highest mountain, largest lake, huge wildlife reserves and hundreds of paradise beaches, it is without a doubt one of Africa’s most appealing destinations and a great introduction to the African continent.
Tanzania has existed as a nation since 1964 after Britain granted Zanzibar independence. It was combined as a country with the previous British colony of Tanganyika at that time. Tribal traditions and over one hundred years of colonial influences have produced an exciting, modern Tanzanian culture. Although Tanzania remains one of the least developed countries in the world, the economy has improved greatly in the last forty years and the country’s political stability forms a solid base for continued growth.
Healthcare and education have also improved since independence and volunteers working in schools, care homes, and medical institutions can help this progress to continue.
Volunteer Vacations and Voluntourism in Tanzania
Living in energetic, colorful Tanzania will certainly provide you with plenty of interests and entertainment when you’re not working. The vibrant markets are worth exploring and are a great place to buy traditional batiks, wood carvings and Maasai jewelry.

There is plenty to explore in and around Dar es Salaam, like the National Museum, the Village Museum, and the Botanical Gardens. There are popular beaches just to the north of the city or you can take a two-hour boat ride to the stunning spice island of Zanzibar. Zanzibar offers an alternative side of Africa, one of tropical seas perfect for snorkelling and diving combined with a traditional Swahili way of life.
Our base in Arusha places you within easy reach of the vast Serengeti National Park and the lesser known Arusha National Park, which can be visited as a day trip from Arusha. Mount Kilimanjaro National Park is also less than two hours drive away and climbing Africa’s highest mountain is an enticing and achievable challenge for most.
Tanzania is now firmly established as one of the best safari destinations in the world with an impressive 25% of the country protected as national parks or conservation areas. Although working as a volunteer abroad in Tanzania will put you in contact with the welcoming Tanzanian people, the wildlife is not to be missed.
Travel around Tanzania has improved greatly over recent years and buses between the main towns are cheap and reasonably efficient. Traveling by train is an option to visit towns between the coast and the west of the country.
