Animal Care in Belize

Overview

In Belize, there are an increasing number of unwanted cats and dogs who are often left to roam the streets without access to proper food, shelter or basic care. With few local organisations working to address this problem, many of these animals are left to fend for themselves, and the problem is only increasing as these stray animals reproduce.

Volunteering on an Animal Care Placement in Belize

Projects Abroad Animal Care volunteer gives water to a dog in Belize

As an Animal Care provider, you will be volunteering at an animal shelter and the only non-profit veterinary clinic that treats strays and provides subsidised medical care to the animals of low-income families in San Pedro. You will provide hands-on care to the shelter and clinic by participating in daily feedings, bathing the dogs, cleaning the kennels, keeping the property clean and contributing towards other maintenance work. To ensure that these cats and dogs stay healthy, you will assist with daily animal inspections and weekly examinations. Volunteers also help administer preventative medicine on a monthly basis.

Giving the animals individual care, taking them for walks, playing with them and providing them with extended socialisation is an important aspect of this project as it helps animals adapt to life off the streets. You will be helping them get used to people again, which will prepare them for the possibility of being adopted. As a volunteer, you will also assist with the adoption process with the help of an adoption counsellor. Seeing an animal who has gone through many hardships leave with a loving family may even be the highlight of your volunteer trip.

Community Outreach Work

The humane treatment of animals is a struggle in developing communities and a large percentage of locals have a deep-rooted fear of dogs, especially since many of the dogs are trained to display aggressive behaviour for the purpose of dog fighting or deliberately scaring the public. To combat these issues you will be encouraged to help with education programmes in the community and address these issues at local primary schools.

Volunteering with animals in Belize will give you access to practical experience that is both rewarding and a valuable addition to your CV. Living with a host family will enable you to learn more about the local way of life, and regular social events will be held so you can get to know the other Projects Abroad volunteers in San Pedro.
