International Volunteer Work in Cambodia on a Cultural Khmer Project

Explore the engaging culture of modern Cambodia as a volunteer on our Khmer Projects. On our Khmer Projects, volunteers not only get to learn about Khmer culture, past and present, but are able to work in local communities by volunteering in an orphanage or care center and spending time in a traditional rural village.

Cambodia is among Asia’s poorest countries. By taking part on our Khmer projects, you are not only taking part in a cultural exchange, but contributing to the economic growth of communities by living there and spending money on local products. Furthermore, while volunteering abroad to do international development work and cultural projects in Cambodia, you are able to learn in depth about Khmer culture in a vivid and stimulating way.

Doing International Community Development and Taking Khmer Cultural Classes

The Khmer Project is available as a one-month project and during this time volunteers take part in a variety of different activities.

During your first couple of weeks in Cambodia, volunteers on the Khmer Projects visit many of the main sites around Phnom Penh. Discovering sites like the National Museum and the Killing Fields with our Khmer Projects supervisor gives a thorough insight into the history and culture of Cambodia and its people.

Volunteers also take part in weekly puppet making classes, cooking lessons, traditional music, and dance classes. Learning some of the Khmer language is also a useful and integral part of this first stage of the project.

Another important component to the Khmer Projects is international community development work. Depending on the season, Khmer Project volunteers may spend some time helping at an orphanage or care center. Volunteers could also spend a week living and working with a rural village community where your help with basic English classes for a couple of hours a day will be greatly appreciated.

You could choose to take part in another project following your month on the Khmer Project. With your newly acquired Khmer language skills and a good understanding of the local culture you will certainly then be well equipped to teach the local children or help in an orphanage.

This project is also available for two weeks if you don't have time to join us for a month or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight please be aware that you may not be able to fit in all the activities and visits that would be possible in a month. Our local staff will contact you to agree your specific two week schedule.
