Volunteer Medicine & Healthcare Projects in Ghana, gain international experience as an intern in a hospital or clinic

Medical Internships in Ghana

In the operating room Our Medicine & Healthcare internships in Ghana are based in Accra, Cape Coast, Kumasi, Ho, and the Akuapem Hills. In Accra, Cape Coast, and Kumasi you will be based in a bustling city hospital working with patients who have a wide range of illnesses. In the small town of Ho you will intern in one of the local hospitals dealing with all types of conditions.

In the semi-rural Akuapem Hills the hospital is smaller, but has a range of departments for interns to do rotations. Small village clinics in Ghana generally lack basic healthcare facilities, so you will be attending to patients who have often traveled many miles to reach a hospital with the services they need.

When you first arrive at the hospital you will discuss your work schedule with your Projects Abroad coordinator and the internship supervisor. Most interns choose to spend time in a variety of departments such as accident and emergency, pediatrics, maternity, pharmacy, physical therapy, and surgery.

The hospitals provide an excellent backdrop for learning about medical practices in another country. You will see conditions that are unusual in Europe and North America such as malaria and typhoid.

Interns in all regions also take part in regular medical outreach work that involves treating children with minor wounds or illnesses from small villages. Sometimes interns pay a visit to orphanages for basic check ups.

"In certain departments I felt I benefited the hospital - the ward, laboratory, outpatients - by helping with the workload. In other areas - operating theatres - it was more of a work experience placement where I benefited from the experience I was gaining. Above all, it was great to be able to choose which departments I worked in and for how long."

Physical Therapy, Nursing, Midwifery and Dentistry Internships in Ghana

Medical outreach in GhanaProjects Abroad offers physical therapy, nursing, midwifery, and dentistry internships in four of the regions we work in.

In Accra, our interns work in a large Police hospital in the neighborhood known as Danquah Circle. Nursing and dentistry internships are available for you here. Midwifery interns will be placed at the Sakumono Community Hospital, a small local hospital that specializes in surgical and maternity care.

In Cape Coast, the Central Regional Hospital has options for physical therapists, nurses, midwives, dentists, and general medical interns. It is one of the most modern hospitals in Ghana with a wide range of departments and lots of new equipment.

In the Akuapem Hills, the Koforidua Regional hospital is a large state run facility that offers internships to anyone with skills or an interest in physical therapy, nursing, midwifery, and dentistry.

In Kumasi, medical interns work in one of six busy city hospitals serving between them over 1.5 million people. You can focus on a range of specialties, including Nursing, Midwifery, and Dentistry.

In Ho, we work with both the municipal and regional hospital as well as a local polyclinic.  These are busy medical centers that attend to the population of the Ho region. Interns here work alongside local nurses and midwives.

Elective Internships in Ghana

interning in Ghana

You can do an Elective Internship in Ghana in Medicine, Physical therapy, Nursing, Midwifery, or Dentistry.

If you wish to do your elective in Ghana, you will have a choice of a large hospital in a city or interning in a more rural setting. You will shadow one of our supervisors who all speak English and are very experienced at working with western medical students. They will be eager to test out your medical knowledge as well as give you the benefit of their training and experience.

Outside of the hospital you will live with a local host family. There is plenty to do in whichever region of Ghana you are located and, as our most popular destination, there will always be a large Projects Abroad volunteer and intern community to get to know.
