Volunteer Sports Coaching Overseas: Soccer in Ghana
Soccer is the national sport in Ghana. Given the 'Black Stars' - the Ghanaian team – successful performance in the 2006 World Cup, soccer in Ghana can only continue to get bigger and better. Soccer is everywhere in Ghana! From the numerous soccer flags on cars, stickers in taxis, locals in jerseys and kids playing in the street, it is immediately apparent that Ghanaians are extremely passionate about soccer.
Our volunteer soccer projects in Ghana provide an opportunity for all young players to develop their basic skills and techniques with the hope that some may achieve the success of Premiership stars Michael Essien or Stephen Appiah. There will also be the opportunity to see one of Ghana's many top division club teams – like Kotoko and Hearts of Oak – in action. Volunteers sometimes take young players to games to help with their soccer development and to provide a well-earned break from their sports coaching.
Volunteer Soccer Coaching with Projects Abroad
In pioneering this new project, Projects Abroad soccer volunteers receive professional coaching in the techniques of coaching and training a team. Volunteers in Ghana will practice in the mornings with a local soccer team and in the afternoons will work with a youth team, giving them the benefit of your newly acquired coaching knowledge and skills. Please see the schedule below.
This project is a fantastic chance to improve your skills and ability while also helping local children to develop their game. If you are good enough, you may even be selected to play for one of the local second division teams!
Volunteers with more experience, those holding a Soccer Association Coaching certificate for example, will be able to get involved in the coaching from day one. You will still be able to benefit from our support and guidance, and get the chance to compete for selection to a local Ghanaian team!
Volunteering Abroad on a Soccer Team in Ghana
In the afternoons during your time coaching soccer, you will be responsible for the development of young players’ basic skills and techniques. You will co-ordinate and plan coaching sessions around topics such as development of ball control, accurate passing, keeping possession and moving into space. Furthermore you will help your supervisor - usually the team's part-time manager - to plan game strategies and lead scrimmages. You will probably be asked to assist in team selection and may even be required to be 'on the bench' for weekend or evening games.
This project is available for two weeks if you don't have time to join us for a month or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
