Intern in Veterinary Medicine in Mongolia
Mongolia is a vast country with desert, grassy steppes and mountains where a wide variety of animals live. The welfare of domestic animals is an essential part of rural development, which is where you can help out as a veterinary intern in Mongolia.
Whether you are a pre-university student considering a career in veterinary medicine, an undergraduate, or a graduate student, interning in Mongolia as a veterinary intern you could get involved in vaccinations, operations, laboratory work, post-mortems, inspections and the routine treatment of domestic animals and pets.
Veterinary interns work at a busy veterinary practice on the outskirts of Ulaanbaatar. The clinics treat all kinds of pets and animals such as dogs, cats, turtles, birds, and small mammals. You will intern alongside the local veterinary staff and have the opportunity to assist them with basic treatments, observe surgery and gain experience of diseases rarely seen in the West.
If you have a particular interest in horses, there is also the chance to spend some of your veterinary internship outside the city. Here, horses are essential and the entire way of life or many people in these areas is dependent upon the horses they own. You will stay with a horseman and his family and help with their daily tasks, such a herding livestock and making food and drink from mares milk.
Our veterinary internships in Mongolia will give you access to invaluable work experience and increase your prospects within this highly competitive field. Show initiative and a willingness to get involved and you will have a thoroughly rewarding experience.
Interning on a Veterinary Internship in Mongolia with Projects Abroad
As an intern in Mongolia on one of our Veterinary internships, you can provide effective and practical help working on a variety of tasks. When you arrive at work on your first day, you will be assigned a supervisor who will be able to advise and support you during your internship. Of course the members of our Projects Abroad office are always on hand to help.
Your work will predominantly involve observing and assisting with operations, treating diseases, and giving vaccinations. You will learn how to handle all types of different animals from livestock to domestic animals.
Whichever internship you’re working on, your input will be greatly encouraged and appreciated. The vets are eager to get you as involved as possible and will enjoy teaching you about veterinary practice in their country.
Experiences on Veterinary Internships in Mongolia
"I was there to see veterinary practice 'with a difference'. Based in a basement clinic in Ulaanbaatar, I was to travel with the vets out to rural visits, to help treat dogs in the city, to stay with nomads and experience the life of a herding community first hand, and to visit the famous Przewalski's horses." Rosie Akester - Veterinary Medicine Intern in Mongolia
This project is available for less than a month if you don't have time to join us for a month or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for shorter durations for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone participating for a longer period.
If you’re interested in getting more involved with the animals of Mongolia, you can also join our unique Culture & Community volunteer placement on the Nomad Project. As well as living in a Ger in a Nomadic community, you can gain experience handling a range of animals including goats, cows, yaks, horses, and camels. Please contact us for more details.
