International Medical Internships in India

A Projects Abroad Medicine & Healthcare internship in India can be a real eye-opener. You will see a healthcare system that in many ways reflects our own but is interspersed with local influences. For instance, you may find a doctor trained in Europe who will not carry out an operation because of the position of the stars. You will come across tropical diseases rarely encountered in the developed world and conditions that have not been diagnosed until very advanced stages.

Dentistry in India

Our Medicine & Healthcare projects in India are located in and around the city of Madurai in Tamil Nadu.

General Medicine internships in India usually involve rotations between different departments, but if you would like to specialize in one area, we can arrange for you to concentrate your time in a particular department at a hospital. Placements include pediatrics, gynecology, and obstetrics, a skin care clinic, and opportunities to observe procedures at busy general hospitals. There are also options in centers working with speech therapy, physical therapy, and occupational therapy programs. You can even work at a center specializing in Ayurvedic treatment. In addition to our regular placements, our medical coordinators also organize occasional visits to other centers in and around Madurai including a center for traditional medicine, a mental health center, and a leprosy clinic.

The breadth of information and experience you will receive in India will be incredible. You will be working with doctors and medical staff who enjoy the opportunity to impart their specialized knowledge to enthusiastic interns. If you do not have experience, doctors will show you everything they know and introduce you to many different medical cases. If you have medical experience, you may be given more responsibility; though please keep in mind if you’re not a certified doctor we cannot guarantee hands-on work.

All interns joining a Medicine project also spend a week working at a hospice just outside Madurai. It’s an incredible place, and offers interns the chance to make a real impact on lives of the around 500 residents who come from backgrounds of extreme poverty. At the hospice interns can work directly with the patients, regardless of experience. Most interns do not want to leave at the end of their time here!

"The Medicine & Healthcare program was exciting - I saw a lot of medical complaints that I would never see in the UK. The days were packed with surgery, gynecology and pediatrics, so I had a great time"
