The project runs all year round, you can start on any day, and it’s fully supervised. So all you need to do is decide on some dates, complete our application form with a £195 deposit and we’ll take care of the rest.

Receive French language lessons from a qualified teacher at a local language center

At the start of your Team Trip, your French skills will be evaluated. Your classes and lessons will be based on your skill level. Don’t speak any French? Don’t worry! We can accommodate you whether you’ve never said “Oui” or if you grew up in France. Your lessons will be tailored according to your skill level. During this time, you can focus on basic French grammar and vocabulary, or work on your conversation.

Practice your French by talking with the locals while you explore the beautiful country of Senegal

The most effective way to improve your French is to surround yourself with French speakers. Our French Language Team Trip in Senegal is the perfect way to do this. We encourage you to speak to people you meet, and practice as much as possible with your host family. You can also go to a museum and listen to the tour in French or order food at a Senegalese restaurant.

Explore the city of St. Louis and learn about Senegalese culture

The country of Senegal has a culture that reflects both indeginous traditions and French influence. Saint Louis, or Ndar as it’s known to locals, is the home of such cultural landmarks as Saint Louis’ Research Center and Documentation Museum and the Saint Louis Jazz Festival. Spend your evenings sampling Senegalese food or exploring the National Park of the Langue de Barbarie. There’s never a dull moment in such a vibrant location!

Where in Senegal will I study French?

St Louis

Our French Language Team Trip in Senegal is based in St Louis, a vibrant city filled with charm. Along busy side streets filled with colorful buildings and French architecture, you’ll find the French Cultural Centre. This is where your language lessons will take place.

St Louis has more to offer than just striking esthetics. It’s a city rich in history. The important cultural and economic role it played in West Africa is one of the reasons St Louis has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. Today, St Louis is an outstanding example of a re-invented colonial city, drawing visitors from all over the world.

When you’re not studying French, or exploring the town, you’ll be living with a French-speaking host family.

Airport pickup, flights and visas

When you arrive at your respective airport, a member of Projects Abroad staff will be there to meet you. You can find more detailed information on arrival airports, orientation, and visas on our Senegal Arrival Procedures page

What is the goal of learning French in Senegal?

The goal of this project is to help you learn French while traveling and practicing your skills in a French-speaking country.

As one of the few languages spoken in all five continents, you’ll encounter French worldwide. French is a major language for international communication, and a valuable skill to have while traveling. Having this language skill will be a great addition to your CV. Knowing a second language also helps you stand out in applications and interviews, and could help you discover more professional opportunities.

Learning a new language or improving your conversation skills becomes a lot easier if you are able to surround yourself with native speakers. Since French is the main language in Senegal, what better way to learn? So join us in Senegal soon!

Management plans

We set out the aims and objectives of our projects in documents called Management Plans. We use them to properly plan the work you’ll do. They also help us measure and evaluate our achievements and impact each year.

Ultimately, our Management Plans help us make our projects better. This in turn means you get to be part of something that makes a real impact where it’s needed. Read more about our Management Plans.

Measuring our impact

Our projects work towards clear long-term goals, with specific annual objectives. Every volunteer and intern we send to these projects helps us work towards these goals, no matter how long they spend on our projects.

Every year we take a step back and look at how much progress we've made towards these goals. We put together a Global Impact Report, which documents our achievements. Find out more about the impact our global community of volunteers, interns and staff make, and read the latest report.

Food and accommodation

You'll stay with a host family in St Louis. They will welcome you into their home, eager to share their customs and have you teach them about your own culture. We believe that this is the best way to immerse yourself in the culture of Senegal and have a truly unique experience.

We will always try to let you live alongside at least one other Projects Abroad volunteer or intern at the same host family. Your room will be modest, but comfortable, clean, and safe.

Your programme fee includes three meals a day.
