What will I do on this cultural immersion project in Samoa?
Volunteering in a village in Samoa is all about immersing yourself in local culture and traditions. However, you’ll also be providing valuable assistance to the community in the process. Here are some of the tasks you’ll be doing:
- Immerse yourself in and learn about the cultures and traditions of the village
- Teach children at the local community school
- Run workshops and classes based on your interests
- Help out with basic chores like cooking and gardening
Your volunteer work in a Samoan village will focus on these main areas:
Immersing yourself in village life
A big part of your project involves immersing yourself in village life. You’ll have the chance to live like a local. You can learn traditional singing, dancing and weaving, and taste some of the delicious local dishes. If you’d like, you can also attend church with your host family. This is a very important aspect of village life in Samoa. You can even learn more about the structure of the community and the chief system.
Teaching school children
Along with learning about Samoan culture, you’ll also help with contributing to the community. As part of this, you’ll be involved in teaching children at the local school. You’ll encourage early childhood development by running fun activities like arts and crafts classes or friendly sports games.
You don’t need to worry about coming up with ideas for these activities on your own. Your supervisor will help you with developing lesson plans if you’d like.
Running workshops and classes
Another way of contributing to the community is by using your particular skill set. We each have our own passions and expertise. By using these to benefit others, you’ll help make sure the community is equipped with a diverse set of skills. This could be anything from sports, to cooking, to drama and music.
You can use your skills to run workshops or classes. In this way, you’ll share your knowledge with others.
Helping with basic chores
You’ll be living with a host family, a perfect way to experience life as local. As part of this, you’ll also assist them with basic chores. This can include learning to cook traditional meals (with the added bonus of being able to taste them afterwards!), gardening, or helping with maintenance work.
Where in Samoa will I work?
This cultural immersion project is based on the island of Upolu. You’ll be living and working in a traditional island village. Facilities here are basic, but this is all part of getting a unique insight into day-to-day life in a Samoan village.
During your free time, Upolu is a stunning place to explore. This setting is particularly exciting for nature lovers, with sites like the lush Falefa Valley and beautiful white-sand beaches.
A typical day experiencing traditional village life in Samoa
A typical day will start with teaching at the local primary school. You’ll usually start at 8.30am and end at 2.30pm. You’ll work on things like reading, writing, sports, and arts and crafts.
After teaching, you can help out with other activities. You can hold a drama workshop for local teenagers or give a presentation on healthy eating.
You can also spend your afternoons helping your host family with chores like cooking or tending to the garden. You’ll also attend singing, dancing, and weaving classes. Throughout your day, you’ll be working closely with and interacting with Samoan locals. All the work you do will give you a unique insight into their way of life.
You’ll have your evenings and weekends free, giving you the chance to explore the island and enjoy dinners with your host family.
What are the aims and impact of this cultural immersion project in Samoa?
The main aim of this project is to give you the chance to immerse yourself in the cultures and traditions of a Samoan village. You’ll also be giving back to the community through the work you do.
This project is something a little different to our other volunteer and internship programmes. Rather than having one focused role, you’ll be able to take on many different roles. This is a great all-round learning experience, and you’ll be able to support the community with whatever they need.
An important aspect of the project is the teaching work you’ll do. The aim of this work is to provide educational support to young children. You’ll work with local teachers to give students extra attention. Ultimately, this helps create a solid foundation for their future.
Volunteer in a village in Samoa and immerse yourself in a different way of life while helping the local community.
Measuring Our Impact
Our projects work towards clear long-term goals, with specific annual objectives. Every volunteer and intern we send to these projects helps us work towards these goals, no matter how long they spend on our projects.
Every year we take a step back and look at how much progress we've made towards these goals. We put together a Global Impact Report, which documents our achievements. Find out more about the impact our global community of volunteers, interns and staff make, and read the latest report.
