What will I do at a Public Health placement in Belize for teenagers?

On this project you will conduct health checks in local communities. You’ll help with the following activities:

  • Run educational public health campaigns
  • Assist nursing staff on outreaches
  • Expand your horizons through unique experiences on the island

Public Health work for teenagers in Belize will be divided through the following ways:

Run community outreaches and public health campaigns

Outreaches and awareness campaigns are an important part of your work. You’ll raise awareness about non-communicable diseases, like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and hypertension. You might also do awareness work about sexual and reproductive health, and HIV/AIDS for young teenagers.

You can conduct research and create eye-catching posters about common healthcare problems in San Pedro. Then go out to local communities and give talks or lead workshops to get students thinking about their health. Awareness campaigns are an important part of preventing illness and creating a community of healthier individuals.

We also organise larger health fairs where you can develop your project management skills.

Assist nurses with basic procedures

During outreaches, you’ll work alongside a local nurse to check blood pressure, blood sugar, and weight. Nurses can then use this data to make referrals or recommend lifestyle changes that could prevent or manage illness.

Expand your horizons

While helping the local community and environment, you’ll also get a chance to expand your own horizons. You will live with a host family. You will get to interact with locals on a daily basis and learn more about the unique culture of Belize. It’s also an excellent way to improve your Spanish or learn a new language.

We have come up with a set itinerary filled with exciting leisure activities which you’ll do with other interns your age. As part of the itinerary, we will take you on a weekend trip to explore San Pedro a bit better. This will give you a chance to see more of this part of Belize and gain a greater understanding of local life.

Where will I work in Belize?

San Pedro

Our Public Health internship for teenagers is based in San Pedro, a town on Ambergris Caye. Ambergris Caye is the largest island off the coast of Belize. This small fishing village is home to over 15,000 people. As you make your way around San Pedro, you’ll see locals whizzing past on golf carts and bikes, the most common forms of transport.

You’ll spend most of your time doing outreach work in local communities. You’ll also conduct awareness campaigns in local schools. The communities where you work will be less developed than what you are accustomed to. They’ll typically have a muddy terrain, and people don’t have regular access to healthcare facilities.

Airport pickup, flights and visas

When you arrive at your respective airport, a member of Projects Abroad staff will be there to meet you. You can find more detailed information on arrival airports, orientation, and visas on our Belize Arrival Procedures page.

What are the aims of a Public Health placement in Belize for teenagers?

The aim of this project is to support disadvantaged communities by giving them access to healthcare services and education. We also want to equip you with the knowledge and skills to pursue a career in healthcare in the future.

On the island of Ambergris Caye in Belize, basic medical services are limited, and there are no hospitals. The only medical facilities on the island are two private doctor’s practices, and a polyclinic. There aren’t enough doctors and nurses to help everyone. In addition, public transport is limited, so it’s difficult for people to travel to get medical care.

You’ll help us provide basic healthcare services in these communities. You’ll get involved with tasks like measuring blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Nurses will use the results to diagnose and treat patients. All of your work is supervised.

Join our Public Health High School Special in Belize and help us work towards our goal of improving healthcare in disadvantaged communities.

Management plans

We set out the aims and objectives of our projects in documents called Management Plans. We use them to properly plan the work you’ll do. They also help us measure and evaluate our achievements and impact each year.

Ultimately, our Management Plans help us make our projects better. This in turn means you get to be part of something that makes a real impact where it’s needed. Read more about our Management Plans.

Measuring our impact

Every year, thousands of High School Special volunteers and interns actively make a difference around the world. During their time abroad, they contribute towards achieving long-term goals and make a long-lasting positive impact on the communities where they work.

We produce an annual High School Specials Impact Report, which documents some of these achievements. Find out more about the impact of these projects, and read the latest report.

Food and accommodation

You'll stay with a host family in San Pedro. They will welcome you into their home, eager to share their customs and have you teach them about your own culture. We believe that this is the best way to immerse yourself in the culture of Belize and have a truly unique experience.

On our High School Specials, we will always try to have you share a room with at least one volunteer or intern of the same sex and approximate age. Your room will be modest, but comfortable, clean, and safe.

Your programme fee includes three meals a day.
