What will Public Health work in Mexico with a group consist of?
On this Public Health internship, there’s plenty of opportunity for practical work and learning. Here are some of the tasks you’ll help with:
- Assist with basic health checks for people in local communities
- Raise awareness around key healthcare issues affecting the community
- Attend medical workshops to learn skills necessary for outreach work
- Attend a medical Spanish lesson
Your work will focus on the following areas:
Health checks at community outreaches
The majority of your work will involve going out into communities and running outreaches. A local nurse will be present during these outreaches to assist checking blood pressure, blood sugar, and weight.
Nurses are able to use the collected data to make referrals or recommend lifestyle changes that could prevent illness.
Healthy lifestyle awareness campaigns
You’ll also help with healthcare awareness campaigns in schools and local communities. This involves going into local communities and giving talks or leading workshops to get people thinking about their health. Awareness campaigns are an important part of preventing illness and creating a community of healthier individuals.
Learn the skills required for the outreaches and awareness campaigns during regular workshops. You’ll learn about different diseases and assessment techniques.
Attend a medical Spanish lesson
You’ll attend one medical Spanish lesson at the start of your time in Mexico. Here, you’ll learn useful words and phrases you can use throughout your time abroad.
Where in Mexico will I work?
This project is based in and around the city of Guadalajara.
In our opinion, Guadalajara is one of the most beautiful inland cities in all of Mexico. The city consists of long, winding cobblestone streets, lush natural surroundings, and a dry tropical climate.
Most of your work will take place in local disadvantaged communities. Healthcare facilities in Guadalajara are generally well-equipped. However, access to quality healthcare remains inconsistent. Despite efforts to improve healthcare for citizens, there are still services limited only to people who can afford it.
What are the aims of a Public Health placement in Mexico for groups?
This project has two primary aims: to broaden healthcare knowledge in a practical setting, and provide people the basic medical care they need.
The experience will contribute to your knowledge and skills to pursue a career in medicine and healthcare.
Medical professionals will also be present during outreaches, giving you the chance to learn directly from them.
What’s more, you’ll help us provide much-needed medical care to people in remote communities. In Mexico, many people can’t afford to pay for medical care, despite the presence of high-quality medical services and facilities. In addition, a lack of education and prevention campaigns limit the scope and reach of new healthcare initiatives. We’re working to change this through our public health work.
Join us and gain Public Health work experience in Mexico, while giving people the basic medical care they need.
We set out the aims and objectives of our projects in documents called Management Plans. We use them to properly plan the work you’ll do. They also help us measure and evaluate our achievements and impact each year.
Ultimately, our Management Plans help us make our projects better. This in turn means you get to be part of something that makes a real impact where it’s needed. Read more about our Management Plans.
Measuring Our Impact
Our projects work towards clear long-term goals, with specific annual objectives. Every volunteer and intern we send to these projects helps us work towards these goals, no matter how long they spend on our projects.
Every year we take a step back and look at how much progress we've made towards these goals. We put together a Global Impact Report, which documents our achievements. Find out more about the impact our global community of volunteers, interns and staff make, and read the latest report.
Food And Accommodation
You'll stay with a host family in Guadalajara. They will welcome you into their home, eager to share their customs and have you teach them about your own culture. We believe that this is the best way to immerse yourself in the culture of Mexico and have a truly unique experience.
We will always try to let you live alongside at least one other Projects Abroad volunteer or intern at the same host family. Your room will be modest, but comfortable, clean, and safe.
Your programme fee includes three meals a day.
