Volunteer as a sports coach in Belize and work with disadvantaged children to improve their fitness. You’ll work at a school, and encourage children to have fun through regular exercise. You’ll also teach them about the importance of healthy lifestyle choices. This is a great way to help and get practical sports coaching experience at the same time.
Childhood obesity is on the rise in Belize, because families can't afford to eat healthier foods. There’s also a lack of structured physical education classes at schools. As a volunteer, you’ll plan and run classes that will help children get fit and improve their skills in different sports.
You’ll live and work in the beautiful island town of San Pedro, and stay with a local host family. This will be your home away from home. It’s also the perfect setting to experience Belizean hospitality, culture, and traditions!

Is volunteering as a sports coach in schools in Belize right for me?
If you are passionate about sports, want to reach out to people in need, and enjoy working with children, this project is perfect for you. You’ll be able to help and gain sports coaching work experience in Belize, which will add value to your CV. You’ll also develop skills like leadership, planning, goal-setting, and motivating others.
You will work as a physical education teacher at a primary school, teaching sports like football, basketball, volleyball or athletics. You don’t need previous experience to join, as our staff will be there to help and guide you. All you need is a passion for sports and fitness!
This project runs throughout the year, and you can join at any time for a minimum of four weeks. Please note that this project closes from the end of June to the beginning of September for summer holidays.
What will I do on this project?
As a volunteer sports coach in Belize, you’ll teach physical education classes at disadvantaged schools. Here are some of the tasks you can expect to do during your placement:
- Coach sports to children at disadvantaged schools
- Implement creative coaching techniques
- Expand your horizons by learning new skills
Your work will focus on the following aspects:
Conduct sports lessons
The most important aspect of your time as a sports coach in Belize is teaching young children. You will work with local coaches to develop their skills in sports such as football, basketball, volleyball or athletics. You will work in tandem with local staff to coordinate training programmes that encourage them to use their skills, develop their fitness and encourage a love for getting active. Your programmes will need to be inventive and fun!
Research and plan creative coach methods
Local coaches might not have access to the same information as you. Before and during your project, you can research the latest trends in coaching your sport. You can introduce these new methods to coaches and students, and share knowledge that they can continue to use for years.
Expand your horizons by learning new skills
Being given the chance to implement, practice and refine your coaching techniques can be of great value to you going forward. Living in Belize is also an excellent opportunity to learn Spanish or improve on your language skills if you already speak it.
Where will I work in Belize?
You’ll be placed in the former fishing village of San Pedro. The town has a quaint Caribbean charm and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. San Pedro has also become northern Belize’s most popular destination. This is thanks to its premium diving sites, birding opportunities, and water sports.
You will work at a public primary school. These schools often lack the funding necessary to hire a trained sports teacher, and this is where you can help. It’s also a great way to gain sports coaching work experience in Belize.
What is a typical day on this project like?
From Monday to Friday, you will work between 8:30 am and 2:30 pm at various schools.
Each physical education class runs for around 45 minutes. You will plan and run each class, so it’s up to you to choose the focus of each lesson. You should try to create a positive environment that emphasises the importance of fitness and healthy living.
When the school day ends at 2:30pm, you can help teachers with after school sports from about 3pm - 5pm. In the evenings, you’ll return to your host family for dinner. We encourage you to use this time to get to know them, and share stories about your day.
Your weekends will be free for you to explore San Pedro. You can relax on the beach or even go diving through marine reserves along the Belize Barrier Reef.
What are the aims of this project?
The aim of this project is to promote the importance of healthy living and getting active for children.
In San Pedro, most primary schools are supported and funded by the government. They have limited funds for teacher’s salaries. You’ll find that a primary school teacher in San Pedro teaches every subject, including physical education. There’s no one dedicated to planning physical education classes and raising awareness about the importance of regular exercise. In addition, childhood obesity is on the rise in Belize.
This is why we need volunteers to coach sports in schools in Belize. You’ll plan and teach classes that encourage children to have fun and get fit at the same time. The work you do will also help children improve their teamwork skills, and become more confident.
Join our school sports programme in Belize today and help encourage children to become fitter and healthier.
Measuring Our Impact
Our projects work towards clear long-term goals, with specific annual objectives. Every volunteer and intern we send to these projects helps us work towards these goals, no matter how long they spend on our projects.
Every year we take a step back and look at how much progress we've made towards these goals. We put together a Global Impact Report, which documents our achievements. Find out more about the impact our global community of volunteers, interns and staff make, and read the latest report.
