Volunteer Sports Coaching in the Philippines

Gain sports coaching experience while you help students improve their fitness at disadvantaged schools

Volunteer as a sports coach in the Philippines and encourage disadvantaged children to become more active. You’ll work at local schools, and help children improve their fitness and sporting abilities. It’s a great way for you to gain practical coaching experience, and give back at the same time.

Developing good lifestyle habits from a young age is important. This is vital in the Philippines, where diseases resulting from poor lifestyle choices (like diabetes) are a leading cause of death. By teaching children about the importance of good diets and regular exercise, you’ll be helping to improve the longevity of the next generation. As a volunteer, you’ll provide students in overcrowded classes with support, and nurture their sporting talent. You could teach them new games, or improve their techniques.

During your time abroad, you’ll live with a host family who will make you feel right at home in your new country. You’ll get to experience a completely different culture, and explore the sights during your time off.

Is volunteer sports coaching in the Philippines right for me?

Do you enjoy working with children? Looking to share your passion for sports with others? Want to gain international coaching experience? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then this is the perfect project for you.

You don’t need to have previous sports coaching experience. However, you will need to have at least a basic knowledge of the sports you’ll be teaching. If you have a background in organising training programmes at your local sports club, for example, then that will be a real asset.

Upon arrival, you’ll receive a comprehensive induction which will take you through everything you need to know. You will also be supervised by the local Physical Education teacher during your time at the school.

This project is available year-round, except during the school holidays in April and May. You can join for a minimum of one week. We do encourage you to stay longer, to make a greater impact and gain even more sports coaching work experience while in the Philippines. Our start and end dates are flexible, so you can choose a time that suits your schedule.

Professional Volunteers and Medical Electives for Students

This project is also ideally suited to professionals interested in using their skills to help, as well as university medical and healthcare elective students.

As a professional, you can be sure we will match your training and expertise to the placement where you are needed most. With your support, we can make an even bigger impact on the local communities we work with.

If you are an elective student, we will organise an elective placement where you can learn as much as possible. We want you gain the knowledge and skills that will begin to shape your professional career.

What will I do on this project?

During your time on this project, you’ll work to improve the fitness levels of students and develop their love of sports. Tasks you can get involved in include:

  • Assist the local Physical Education teacher with sports lessons
  • Teach a variety of different sports to the children
  • Combine this placement with a Care or Teaching Project if interested

Your work will focus on the following areas:

Assist the local Physical Education teacher with lessons

Your main role on this placement is to assist the local Physical Education teacher with their lessons. This will involve planning activities and running different games during class time. You’ll be working with students aged between 10 - 16, with around 15 - 20 students in a class.

Teach a variety of different sports to the children

There are many different options when it comes to the types of sports you can teach. These include football, basketball, baseball, athletics and in some cases, lawn tennis. You might be asked to work independently with smaller groups of students, or be paired up with another volunteer. Teach them about the rules of the game, and help them to develop their technique.

Combine this placement with a Care or Teaching project if interested

If you would like some indoor classroom experience as well, you are more than welcome to combine this sports coaching placement with a Care or Teaching Project. This means you will split your day between the two, usually working at your sports placement in the afternoon.

Where in the Philippines will I work?

Bogo City

You’ll be based in the City of Bogo, which is located in the northern part of Cebu Island. Here you’ll be working at a government-run primary and secondary school. Most of the students at these schools come from disadvantaged families. The school strongly encourages their students’ enthusiasm for sports, so your initiatives will be welcomed.

While Bogo isn’t a big city, it has all the amenities you might need, such as restaurants, grocery stores, and banks.

AIRPORT PICKUP, FLIGHTS AND VISAS

When you arrive at your respective airport, a member of Projects Abroad staff will be there to meet you. You can find more detailed information on arrival airports, orientation, and visas on our Philippines Arrival Procedures page.

A typical day on the School Sports Project

After enjoying breakfast at the home of your friendly host family, you’ll travel to your placement via a motorised tricycle, similar to a rickshaw. On your first day, a Projects Abroad staff member will accompany you and show you the way.

A typical day on this project runs from 8am - 4pm, Monday to Friday. You will have your evenings and weekends free to take part in leisure activities.

During your time at the school, you’ll assist the main Physical Education teacher with the lessons. Sometimes you may be asked to work with groups of students independently, or be paired up with another volunteer. You’ll find yourself teaching a range of different sports, such as football, athletics, and basketball.

Once you’re done for the day, it’s time to enjoy all that the Philippines has to offer. We organise regular socials for our volunteers, which are a great way to make friends and get to know one another. You can also spend time getting to know your host family over a Filipino dinner, or watch the sunset from the beautiful beaches.

What are the aims and impact of this project?

The main aim of this project is to encourage fitness and emphasise the importance of regular exercise among Filipino youth.

According to the World Health Organisation, non-communicable diseases are one of the leading causes of death in the Philippines. These diseases include cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and chronic respiratory disease. Unhealthy diets, smoking, alcohol, and a lack of exercise are all major contributing factors.

One of the ways we can tackle this issue is to help students to form healthy lifestyle habits from a young age. Sport has so many benefits, not only in terms of one’s health, but also in terms of self-confidence and overall wellbeing. It is a great way to develop important life skills such as teamwork, motivation, and responsibility.

Our School Sports Project in the Philippines began in 2015 at one local school in Bogo City, but expanded to more schools as we saw the need. Physical Education is included in the school curriculum, but there is a lack of sports teachers in the areas in which we work. There can be up to 60 students in one class. This means that teachers cannot give students the attention they need to develop their sporting skills.

Your role is to reduce to student-teacher ratio, working with smaller groups of children. You’ll coach them in a range of different sports, improving their technique and fitness levels. Most importantly, you’ll help to make it a fun, enjoyable experience for the students.

Join us on our School Sports Project in the Philippines and share your passion for sport with the next generation.

Management Plans

We set out the aims and objectives of our projects in documents called Management Plans. We use them to properly plan the work you’ll do. They also help us measure and evaluate our achievements and impact each year.

Ultimately, our Management Plans help us make our projects better. This in turn means you get to be part of something that makes a real impact where it’s needed. Read more about our Management Plans.

Measuring Our Impact

Our projects work towards clear long-term goals, with specific annual objectives. Every volunteer and intern we send to these projects helps us work towards these goals, no matter how long they spend on our projects.

Every year we take a step back and look at how much progress we've made towards these goals. We put together a Global Impact Report, which documents our achievements. Find out more about the impact our global community of volunteers, interns and staff make, and read the latest report.

FOOD AND ACCOMMODATION

You'll stay with a host family in Bogo City. They will welcome you into their home, eager to share their customs and have you teach them about your own culture. We believe that this is the best way to immerse yourself in the culture of the Philippines and have a truly unique experience.

We will always try to let you live alongside at least one other Projects Abroad volunteer or intern at the same host family. Your room will be modest, but comfortable, clean, and safe.

Your programme fee includes three meals a day.

LEISURE ACTIVITIES AND FREE TIME

The Philippines is made up of over 7,000 islands, so naturally there are some beautiful beaches where you can relax during your free time. However, there are plenty of other activities to keep you busy during your trip.

With white-sand beaches come all the exciting activities associated with living close to the sea. You can go snorkelling through the pristine waters, play volleyball, or relax on the sand as the sun sets.

In Cebu City itself, you can explore the traditional Carbon Market. For an insight into the country’s history, you can visit Fort San Pedro and Magellan's Cross. Here, you’ll learn more about the Spanish conquest.

The Spanish influence is also felt in the regular fiestas and street parades held in the Philippines. If you volunteer around the end of January, you’ll even get to experience the Sinulog Festival, a nine day Mardi Gras-style party.

With so many volunteers joining us throughout the year, there will likely be other volunteers in the Philippines during your trip. You can connect with them and explore as a group or travel independently if you prefer.

SAFETY AND STAFF SUPPORT

Your safety and security is our prime concern. We have many procedures and systems to ensure you have the support you need to enjoy your trip with peace of mind. Our Projects Abroad staff are available 24 hours a day to help, and will be on-hand to make sure you settle in well at your accommodation and placement. If you encounter any problems, they will be available to help at any time.
