Teaching in the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador as a Projects Abroad volunteer will give you a new perspective on this incredible country. Whether you are volunteering during your gap year, career break or on an extended holiday, you will have a valuable role to play teaching in one of our partner schools.
By volunteering in Ecuador you will gain invaluable teaching and classroom based work experience. The focus is on conversational English and you will work alongside local staff, so you do not need any formal qualifications or TEFL training.
The impact you have on the lives of your students will be obvious and long-lasting. You will also be part of a much larger volunteer network, which is making a really positive contribution to the wider community. It will be an experience you will never forget.
Teaching Placements in Ecuador
Our Teaching projects in Ecuador are based in the town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno on the island of San Cristobal in the Galapagos Islands. There is an increasing demand to learn English amongst Ecuador’s young population, and speaking English is the key to getting a job in the island's thriving tourist industry.
Based in a primary or secondary school, you can work with students aged 6-16 years old and help local teachers improve the students’ English pronunciation. By teaching fun, inclusive lessons you can develop the students’ confidence and contribute to the improvement of their language skills. Your students are sure to be interested in you and your life, and you can use this curiosity to get them talking to you and each other.
In most schools you will either teach classes on your own or teach classes together with another Teaching volunteer. Local teachers and staff will welcome any ideas you have if you would like to get involved in teaching other subjects such as drama, art, or music, physical education, or IT.
Please note that if you would like to teach an academic subject other than English – for example, math or science – you will need to speak intermediate Spanish.
Projects Abroad Community Progamme
Projects Abroad Ecuador also runs an English programme, based at our office in San Cristbal. This programme offers free English classes for children in the community. These take place in the afternoons and evenings. If you would like to get involved further and teach after normal school hours, you have the option of teaching here and contributing to a valuable community resource.
Additionally, you can work with teenagers from the ages of 14-17 and organise various social and conservational activities for them. These activities are crucial as they give youth the opportunity to do something constructive with their free time.
You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Ecuador Teaching Management Plan.
Start as a Classroom Assistant and Get Involved in Extracurricular Activities
In most schools you will begin as a classroom assistant, supporting the teacher with lessons. However, as you get to know the children better and start to grow in confidence you may want to take on more responsibility. Volunteers can also help with sports classes and IT lessons.
You can teach extra English classes in the afternoons and evenings on a Projects Abroad community programme. You can also choose to teach some French in these classes if you are fluent in the language.
Volunteer for Two to Three Weeks
You can join a Teaching project in Ecuador for two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
If you are a fully qualified Teacher, we can tailor you a placement where your skills will be put to good use. Please Contact Us for more information.
