Child Care followed by Conservation in South Africa

Projects Abroad volunteer does an educational activity with a child at a care project in Cape Town, South Africa

Volunteer with children at a crèche or day care centre in Cape Town, South Africa followed by exhilarating, remote conservation work at Wild at Tuli nature reserve to the north.

Projects Abroad is based in Cape Town, South Africa, and at the Wild At Tuli Reserve, Botswana

When to go:

October is a great time to enjoy spring in Cape Town and get maximum exposure to working with elephants at our Conservation site!

How long:

We recommend joining Care for 4 weeks and Conservation for at least 2 weeks.

Programme description:

First spend 4 weeks working with, playing with, and supporting underprivileged children at one of our Care placements in Cape Town.  These placements are at crèches, care centres, and preschools, located about 30 minutes from the centre of Cape Town in informal settlements called townships. Volunteers will work in either Vrygrond or Capricorn Park.

The children at our placements are normally aged 3 months to 6 years, and class sizes can range from 5 to 40 children! These centres are often understaffed, so volunteers provide enthusiastic assistance and act as an extra pair of hands. Activities that volunteers can get involved in include:

  • Helping the children learn basic but important life skills
  • Preparing children for school
  • Assisting with sports, art, music, and drama lessons

This project benefits children from disadvantaged communities as well as their caregivers.

Next, fly north to Polokwane to join our Conservation project at ‘Wild at Tuli’ nature reserve. This is a private reserve located on the Limpopo River which serves as the border between South Africa and Botswana. You are almost guaranteed to see elephants as you get a true ‘wild bush’ experience! Volunteers live in large, spacious safari tents on the reserve and are accompanied at all times by our Conservation staff.

Wild at Tuli is 5000 hectares large and a haven for African wildlife. Volunteers work to address major environmental problems such as drought, deforestation and land degradation. They also learn about GPS techniques and animal tracking to help with population censuses in the reserve. Some more examples of the varied work includes:
