What We Provide
What is Included in the Cost?
The cost of your project includes your food, accommodation, insurance, arrangements, preparation and back-up. Projects Abroad also covers the cost of transport to and from your work placement where required.
The projects have set costs from a minimum of two, three or four weeks (depending on the project) and extra weeks can be added on. You can add as many extra weeks as you like (within visa restrictions) - you can see this more clearly on the prices page. Below are more details on what we provide.
The full organisation of your project; including a supervisor at your placement and worthwhile work to do.
Wherever possible, volunteers live with local host-families. These families are carefully selected against criteria such as comfort, privacy, cleanliness and because they are friendly and welcoming. The accommodation is comfortable by local standards but you should expect this to be quite different from the comforts of home that you might be used to. In some destinations, including China, Vietnam and Cambodia, volunteers live together in shared volunteer apartments or houses. Conservation volunteers also usually live together in shared accommodation, from beach-side dormitory rooms in Mexico to wooden bungalows in the Peruvian rainforest.
Whatever kind of accommodation you're living in, we will ensure you are provided with three meals a day; you can't work on an empty stomach! For lunch you may have a meal at your placement, get given a packed lunch or return to your host family or shared accommodation to eat. In some countries you may be given a food allowance.
We have over 700 trained staff worldwide. In every country we have an office run by an experienced Country Director who has been trained in the UK. Staff can be contacted 24 hours a day. They are responsible for your general well-being and liaise with your placement, accommodation and our Australian staff. See also Safety & Back-up.
Transport to and from work is provided by Projects Abroad where required.
Travel and medical insurance is included automatically; you are covered no matter where you are from or where you are going. This can be extended on request to cover other travel you may be doing. It is important that you carefully read the policy, especially regarding pre-existing medical conditions, to check that the cover meets with your needs.
Unfortunately our current insurers can only provide cover for our volunteers up to the age of 65. Volunteers aged 66 and over will need to obtain alternative travel and medical insurance. For further information, please contact email@example.com.
Money is distributed across our placements and is put towards developing new ones. It is done on a case by case basis, you can call us to discuss this further.
What is not Included in the Cost?
We can arrange these for you or you can book them yourself. Either way, our staff will be waiting at the airport on your arrival, whatever time of day or night you land.
These will vary by destination and your vaccination history and choices. We can give you informal pointers but recommend you consult a GP in the first instance.
These vary hugely. We will give you full advice on obtaining a visa, but it can be a surprising extra cost. We have a rough guide to what to expect here.
