If you are looking for experience in Physiotherapy, then consider volunteering in Sri Lanka with Projects Abroad.
Physiotherapy volunteers mainly work in government hospitals. Hospitals here are large with over two hundred doctors working in all departments. You will be busy, and will learn a lot from your time here. You will shadow existing staff, who although they are very busy, are keen to give you time so you can learn from them.
By becoming a valuable member of their team, and showing how enthusiastic you are, you may find you get given more hands-on work to do. You could work with a variety of patients such as those needing rehabilitation, elderly people and stroke victims.
Physiotherapy in a Care Setting
If you prefer, you can work in a care home with disabled children. Children here benefit from one-to-one treatment that is not just physically beneficial, but also help stimulate them mentally too. This is a placement with severely disabled children and the work will be intense. Anyone who has Physiotherapy experience will be valued at this care home.
Volunteers also get involved in identifying and working with children from local care centre that need to receive physiotherapy or other treatments. As with all our Medicine & Healthcare projects, your exact role will depend on your personal level of experience and knowledge. You will work on a one-to-one basis with each child giving them valuable physiotherapy support and also concentrated attention, which will help them thrive.
While in Sri Lanka, you will live with one of our host families, which is a chance to experience the real Sri Lanka. We also have a lively Projects Abroad volunteer community you can spend your time with while exploring the coastal towns of the surrounding region.
You can join the Physiotherapy Project in Sri Lanka for two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Sri Lanka Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.
