On the Public Health project in Togo you will help local people gain access to basic medical services in areas where it’s needed most. It’s an opportunity for you to gain hands on medical experience in a developing country. You will work alongside our partner organisation and local volunteers in Togo, who form the backbone of the project. Regular outreaches will be organised by the team, and you’ll assist with daily tasks.
Togo’s Public Health project is based in the bustling city of Lomé. Malaria, cholera and tuberculosis are some of the diseases that children and adults with no access to medical assistance are at risk of contracting in Togo. With no attention, these diseases could prove fatal. Togo lacks structured programmes focused on assisting and caring for street children in particular, and the local Public Health team try to address this through their outreach work. By volunteering on this project, you will work towards the goals set out in our Togo Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan
Voluntary Public Health Placement in Togo
The team in Togo and local volunteers set up regular outreaches in areas where there is a need. As people arrive, you will work alongside the local team to speak to the residents, dress their wounds and follow-up on previous cases. Follow-ups ensure that their wounds heal and serious infections are avoided.
These visits will allow you to give the team and local volunteers additional support when they engage with the community. You’ll help our partner organisation bring about long term change and gain hands-on experience in the process. If there are any medical needs that are serious or cannot be treated during these outreaches, patients will be taken to one of our partner clinics where they will be treated.
Visits to care centres are also set up by the team where medical check-ups take place. You will dress wounds, follow-up on previous cases and ensure that serious medical cases get referred to a clinic. Occasional outreaches outside the city are also organised.
All volunteers on the Public Health project in Togo will live with host families. You’ll eat meals made by your host family and share in the family’s daily routine. This is the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in Togo’s rich culture and take part in cultural exchange.
Please note that it’s not a requirement, but a basic or intermediate level of French is beneficial on this project. Meaningful communication with the community is encouraged, but we will have an English speaking supervisor available at all times to assist you. If you are interested in taking French lessons while in Togo, please read about the French Language Course we have on offer.
