Volunteering on a Speech Pathology project in Togo is a really worthwhile project to be involved in. Togolese people are warm and welcoming and your time as a speech pathology volunteer will not just provide help to the local people, but will also give you valuable work experience.
Disabilities are often frowned upon and surrounded by stigma in Togo. Your help on the project could help to change these attitudes.
Speech Pathology volunteers can be based either in an NGO or in a school. One of the NGOs with which we work is a centre that supports around 30 children. Most have disabilities and benefit from focused speech pathology work.
You will support the existing speech pathologists at the centre. You may be involved in counselling the parents alongside the staff as well as playing educational games with the children. Individual sessions with the children form an important part of their treatment. Group sessions and raising awareness surrounding the issues of disabilities also form part of your role.
Other Options in Togo
You can also get involved working in a local deaf school. Here you will help with pronunciation of sounds, spelling and teaching sign language. As existing staff only get to see some of the children, your support can extend the services so more children benefit from the therapy.
Volunteers on all medical related projects in Togo need a good level of French. Most of the staff and children do not speak English. It is vital that you can understand and communicate in French while you are working in Togo, this is of even more importance in a speech focussed placement.
While volunteering in Togo, you will stay with one of our local host families. You can also meet other Projects Abroad volunteers and explore what the local area has to offer with them.
You can join the Speech Pathology project in Togo for two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. These projects have been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the placement and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the NGO or school please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Togo Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.
