Is a Music Production internship in South Africa right for me?
Do you have a passion for music? Want to know what goes on behind the scenes in a music studio? Are you perhaps a music or audio engineering student? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then this internship is ideal for you.
You’ll gain hands-on experience on this internship. This is a great asset to your CV and will set you apart from others in an incredibly competitive industry. At the end of your internship, you’ll receive a certificate and a letter of recommendation from the studio’s producer. You can use this to further your career back home.
You can join us anytime from one week onwards, and our start and end dates are entirely flexible. However, to get the most out your time abroad, we recommend that you stay for at least a month. This way you have the chance to experience a full range of different activities, and see a task through to completion.
During your time on this internship, you will be supervised by two music professionals. They will teach you everything you need to know, so you don’t have to have any prior experience to join.
What will I do at my Music Production placement in South Africa?
There are many different and exciting aspects to music production. Here are just some of the things you can do:
- Learn to set up and use different kinds of studio equipment
- Find out how to use recording and editing software
- Assist with artist discovery and promotion
- Produce your own beats and melodies in the studio
At your Music Production placement in South Africa, your work will focus on the following areas:
Learn to set up and use different kinds of studio equipment
You will learn how to set up and modify a range of equipment with the studio engineer in a fully-equipped modern studio. From microphones to electronic instruments, you’ll get hands-on experience with some of the latest acoustic technology.
This is a great first step to see exactly how all the different hardware contributes to the process of creating and recording music.
Find out how to use recording and editing software
It’s just as important to discover how various computer programmes are used to generate the finished product. Learn how to record, edit, and master an artist’s work for a polished, professional sound. You’ll get to grips with a range of different recording software and be equipped with important technological know-how.
Assist with artist discovery and promotion
Of course, there’s no point in creating great music if there’s no one to hear it. An important part of this internship is helping to promote the music of artists who have signed on with the studio label. You’ll immerse yourself in the local music scene, finding opportunities for musicians to share their talent with the world. Complement this with an online presence, and keep various social media channels updated on their behalf.
The studio label is always on the lookout for new musicians. You can help them discover new artists by attending gigs, writing reviews, and interviewing band members. Some may be invited into the studio to record, and you’ll have the chance to work with them as a music producer. You might also be able to get involved in branding exercises, such as photoshoots or music videos.
Produce your own beats and melodies in studio
You’ll have the chance to produce your own music in the studio, learning how to produce beats and melodies. Put your knowledge of the studio equipment and software into practice to create a sound that’s uniquely yours. It’s a great souvenir to take back home and show people what you’re able to do.
Our project partners in South Africa
On this Music Production Internship, we have partnered with Sounds of the World. This international music network brings together the best of international and local music from across the globe. It’s a way for artists to share their music, as well as advice, news and event dates with others on an international platform. It also brings music lovers and musicians together, allowing them to interact directly with one another.
Where in South Africa will I work?
You will be based in a residential suburb of beautiful Cape Town. However, you may also need to travel away from the studio to attend gigs or other band activities.
From your placement, it is easy to get to the city centre, or to surrounding tourist attractions such as surf spots or national monuments. We encourage you to take advantage of all that Cape Town has to offer during your stay. Apart from the usual tourist hotspots, the city also has a vibrant arts scene with many live music venues.
From classical to heavy metal, you’ll find a concert that suit your tastes. Or why not expand your horizons and try something new? Cape Town is famous for its jazz, electronic music, and African beats.
A typical day on the Music Production Internship
You will generally stay with a host family close by to the studio, so it’s a quick walk in the morning to get to work. If you do happen to live further away, you will catch public transport to get to the studio. On your first day, our staff will accompany you to show you the way.
A typical day on the Music Production Internship runs from 10am to 3pm, Monday to Friday. However, you may need to take part in some after-hours work, such as attending gigs, meetings, or other events.
There is no real “typical day” on this internship, as it all depends on what the studio has booked. But this means that your time here will be varied and interesting! During the day, you will either work on existing studio projects, or learn about the different equipment and roles in the studio.
On any given day, you will help to set up equipment and assist with the recording process of artists who have booked studio time. Other days you will focus on the promotion and management of artists, planning an event, or updating social media channels.
Once you’re done for the day, take advantage of all that Cape Town has to offer. Immerse yourself in the local music scene, exploring different live venues and genres of music. Outdoor concerts are not to be missed during the summer. Otherwise you can sample some of the delicious local cuisine, spend some time at the beach, and explore the many city markets.
What are the aims and impact of this project?
The aim of this internship is to give you the opportunity to expand your knowledge of music production in a different cultural setting.
You will work in a modern Cape Town music studio, which will give you the opportunity to learn from two professional musicians. Studio work in many other countries can be difficult to come by, so this really is a unique experience and we encourage you to make the most of it. Local artists also benefit, as they receive publicity and other opportunities that would otherwise not occur without your involvement.
Join our internship and gain music production work experience in South Africa, and give your CV the edge.
