As a volunteer on our Teaching project in Peru, you’ll have the opportunity to improve the spoken and written English abilities of students in under-resourced schools. Knowledge of English can greatly improve a child’s future prospects in terms of getting job. Furthermore, many of the local teachers have a basic level of English, which makes it difficult to teach the subject effectively.
Your role as an English teacher in Peru
Our Teaching placements are based in and around the Cusco area. Volunteers can choose to work in primary schools with children aged 6 – 12, or in high schools with students aged 12 – 18.
You will run the class with the support of the local teacher. Only 5th and 6th grade classes have English lessons, and you will focus mainly on teaching vocabulary. Volunteers must speak basic Spanish since you be leading the classes and will not have someone with you who can translate.
You will spend your free time planning lessons with the help of your Teaching supervisor. As a primary school teacher, you will have more freedom when planning classes. Extra teaching and extracurricular activities can also be organised.
The government has implemented a new detailed national lesson plan which has a fixed schedule. You will need to use or create teaching materials based on the lesson plan. Volunteers are encouraged to focus on conversational English instead of written assignments and grammar lessons. Your main role will be to support the local teacher. These placements are suitable for volunteers who do not speak Spanish.
Teacher training programme
Volunteers have the opportunity to take part in our innovative teacher training programme. This training project runs for four weeks to six weeks between January and March. It is organised in conjunction with the Peruvian Ministry of Education, and is overseen by the local teaching supervisor.
You will prepare interactive lessons for small groups of local teachers that are divided up according to their level of English language knowledge. Volunteers teach vocabulary and pronunciation to beginners, and verbs and grammar to those with an intermediate to advanced level of English.
Volunteering on a Teaching project in Peru
Our team in Peru organise monthly network meetings with the teachers and weekly workshops for all Teaching volunteers. These meetings will provide you with a greater insight into the educational system in Peru and the background of the placement where you’re working. During the workshops you will receive practical advice and suggestions regarding lesson plans and activities to carry out at your Teaching project.
There are also plenty of resources in our Cusco office available for you to use, such as worksheets, lesson plans and other teaching materials.
The schools in Peru also take a two week holiday around the end of July/start of August. During this time volunteers help with a variety of community projects.
You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Peru Teaching Management Plan.
