Volunteer Travel

Volunteers who travel to Mongolia are likely to see these nomad huts out on the steppe

Volunteer travel is the perfect way to explore the world in a meaningful way, and Projects Abroad can help you achieve this. Over our history, nearly 100,000 international volunteers have supported the developing world while travelling and learning from other cultures. We work in over 30 countries and our hundreds of programmes make it easy to see the world – and travel with purpose.

Why volunteer travel?

Travel with a community of like-minded volunteers: We send over 10,000 volunteers abroad each year. You'll have a community of other travellers built right into your time abroad, and make new friends from around the world.

Travel with the support of local staff: Our local staff will meet you when you arrive, help you settle in, introduce you to other volunteers, arrange a worthwhile work placement for you, help you make travel arrangements, and more. Most importantly, they are available anytime you need them, 24 hours a day.

Travel without being a tourist: Live with a host family, experience the local cuisine and take local transportation. Volunteering allows you to experience a different side of a country that you wouldn’t normally see as a tourist. You’ll interact with locals and learn about their customs, participating in valuable cross-cultural exchange.

Travel with a purpose: Don't just be an observer. Be part of our ongoing volunteer and internship work. You'll have a truly useful role to play, helping others while you explore your host country.

Explore through volunteer travel

A volunteer travel programme allows you to completely immerse yourself in a different environment and culture. You will gain a deeper understanding of the world in a way that isn't possible through ordinary travel.

While any of our projects will give you the opportunity to travel the world and give back, here are some options that we feel are particularly suited for those who wish to combine volunteering with travel:

  • Care and Teaching projects - Work in care centres, kindergartens and special needs clinics– all of which are understaffed and lack resources. You can also spend your time overseas teaching English to local children.
  • Conservation projects - Live and work in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest, dive with sharks in Fiji, conduct wildlife research in the Himalayas and more!
  • Culture and Community projects - These may be some of the best programmes for volunteer travellers. Get a taste of true adventure by living with a nomadic family in Mongolia, learning about traditional Khmer culture in Cambodia, or working in a small village community in Samoa.
  • Archaeology projects - Our Archaeology programmes in Peru and Romania are a fantastic way for volunteers to learn about ancient civilisations and cultures.

No matter what which option you choose, by the time your project has finished you'll have developed a much greater understanding of other cultures and people during your travels, and gained new memories and friends from your time abroad. What better way is there to travel?
